The Oirase River flows through the Shimoda-Oirase area. The river brings spawning salmon to the area. There is a riverside park dedicated to salmon, and in November every year, there is a very popular salmon festival at the park. Two salmon are featured prominently on the Shimoda manhole cover. Shimoda - Oirase is the site of a popular Aeon Mall, the largest Statue of Liberty in Japan, as well as the home of Momokawa Sake Factory, the maker of one of Japan's most popular sakes.
