Shirakawa Village(白川村)

<Shirakawa-mura, Ono-gun, Gihu >
@Shirakawa-go ==> Shirakawa-gou
A Shirakawa-go manhole cover showing the traditional A-framed thatched roofed houses that the village is famous for.  The A-framed style is called Gassho-zukuri, or "prayer-hands construction", since the slanting roofs resemble two hands held together in prayer.  The A-frame style is very strong, which helps the buildings withstand the weight of the heavy snows that accumulate in the long Winters in the area.  We enjoyed the riverside onsen at Shirakawa-go.  The village is a UNESCO World Heritage Site.
