Hirosaki City(弘前市)

< Hirosaki City, Aomori >
Hirosaki has a rich Buddhist tradition, so Buddhist symbols are common throughout the city.   The swastika originates in the Indus Valley Civilization of India, and Buddhism has used the symbol for many, many centuries, long before Nazi Germany's atrocities caused many in the West to have a negative feeling about the symbol.  The Buddhist swastika is a left-facing design, while the Nazi version faced right.  This Hirosaki manhole cover shows an apple, as well as a Buddhist Swastika.  The Hirosaki area of Aomori Prefecture is famous for delicious apples.
