Yokosuka City(横浜市)

< Yokosuka, Kanagawa >
This manhole cover shows Commodore Matthew Perry, and one of his Black Ships, whose first stop in Japan was at Kurihama, Yokosuka on July 14, 1853.  Commodore Perry forced Japan to open ports to western merchant vessels, and to also allow military vessels to resupply and refuel in Japanese ports.  The manhole cover also shows Kan-nonzaki lighthouse, the first Western style lighthouse in Japan, built in 1868.
